Finding the Best Deal on Maui Hotels / Resorts

You’re in Maui to have a great time and a beautiful lush resort can make your trip even more memorable.  But, you don’t want to sell the house to pay for it, so we have some suggestions to get the most for your money in Maui.

Believe it or not, some of the best ways to stay at a big name Maui resort for less are to rent a timeshare at one of the major resorts.  Timeshare rentals offer so much for so much less.  I have personally stayed in an oceanview room at the Maui Marriott Ocean Resort (a view from my room is at the left) for $250.00 per night in height of the summer season all taxes included.  This same unit sold as a “hotel room” from Marriott would have easily been $389.00 plus taxes per night.  To book your own timeshare rental, visit www.redweek.com.  Don’t despair if there are no rentals for your week, on Redweek you can post a “Redwish”.  If an owner has a unit available, they will contact you via email.  Best of all, if you rent from a timeshare owner, you don’t have to attend a timeshare sales presentation since you are a “guest” of the owner you rented from.

One side note about timeshares is that the daily “maid” service found in nearly all traditional hotels will be missing at your timeshare.  Instead, most timeshares offer a “tidy” day midway through your stay.  In spite of this, timeshare rental is my absolute favorite way to travel these days.

Which Area on Maui?

When considering where to stay on Maui, there are so many decisions.  Keep in mind that Maui has so many beautiful areas that you have a good chance of picking a great spot no matter where you stay.

However, you’re here to find out the best places, so here they are:

 Kaanapali -

This is the first “planned” resort area on Maui.  Kaanapali is my favorite resort area for numerous reasons.  First, there is something for everyone here.  Kaanapali is just a few short minutes from Lahaina the small town with quaint little shops (and some gaudy tourist stores too) amazing oceanfront restaurants, and marina from where many boating tours depart.

In Kaanapali proper, there is golf, shopping, restaurants, and of course, many beautiful resorts.  There is a beachfront boardwalk which runs the length of the Kaanapali area from the Hyatt Hotel to the Sheraton Maui.  This is a great place to take an evening or sunset stroll.  And, along the boardwalk, you’ll find a great selection of oceanview restaurants with outdoor seating and gas torches lighting up the night.

Some of the best resorts on Maui are in Kaanapali.  Along this strip, you’ll find the Hyatt, Westin Maui, Sheraton Maui, and Maui Marriott Ocean Resort.  There are also a number of other great hotels and condos along this section of beach.

From Kaanapali, you have a great view of Maui’s neighbor island of Lanai as well as the neighbor island of Molokai.

Summary – Kaanapali – Well planned area with many activities in walking distance.  Great for couples, families, kids.

 Wailea-

For the most part, Wailea is a bit more upscale and less kid-friendly, but there are still good “kid friendly” options in Wailea.  In Wailea, you’ll find resorts such as the Four Seasons Maui (many celebrities tend to stay here), and the Grand Wailea Resort to name just two.

Wailea lacks that great boardwalk found in Kaanapali and therefore, the car is your best option in Wailea.  For instance, if you are staying at the “Grand” or the Four Seasons (which are neighboring resorts) there are no shops or restaurants in walking distance, with the exception of resort restaurants.   There is certainly golf in Wailea, lots of it, and it is very good quality golf at that.

Wailea does have a wonderful view.  The Molokini Crater is visible as well as the island of Lanai and the island Kahoolawe.  Just like Kaanapali, Wailea is blessed with amazing sunsets and restaurants which take advantage of their sunset view.

If you are staying in Wailea, you will need to travel to Lahaina (about 45 minutes) if you would like to take most of the boating excursions that depart from Maui.  There is a small boat ramp in nearby Kihei from which some diving and snorkeling charters depart, but the Kihei boat ramp is really just a parking lot with a boat ramp.

Summary - Wailea is most definately a more upscale area, less accessability to shopping and dining.  Not as "kid friendly" overall when compared to Kaanapali.  If you don't have kids or will be without them on your Maui trip, Wailea is a beautiful destination, a golfer's paradise.
