GETTING AROUND MAUI
Compared to most cities
and towns on the Mainland, Maui is tiny. Don't let this fool you.
If you want to really see Maui, and there is a lot to see, you'll need
to rent a car. There's so much to see that you could really
spend your whole trip to Maui in the car. But, you probably
didn't come to Maui to spend all of your time in the car. So,
make a bit of a plan before you go.
Renting a Car in Maui
As we mentioned, to
really see Maui you will want to rent a car. The most convenient
way to rent a car is when you arrive at the airport in Kahului.
Many times a much better price can be obtained renting a car for your
entire trip as you will normally be eligible for a weekly discount.
You can also purchase an Entertainment book to get some really good
coupons for discounts on rental cars.
Rental cars are also
available in most of the resort areas, however, the selection will be
limited and the prices will not be as good. Add this to the fact
that you'll then need to pay about $25.00/person one way to get to and
from the airport and you'll soon see why it is just easier and nearly
as cheap to rent a car for the duration of your stay.
Many of the resorts on
Maui do offer complimentary self parking. But, watch out,
because some resorts will charge up to $18.00/day to park. This
parking fee may or may not be specified prior to your arrival, so the
best idea is to call before you book. That way you avoid a big
surprise at the end of your vacation in paradise.
As far as navigating
Maui goes, it's really pretty simple. Just pickup a map from
your rental car agency when you rent. That's about all you'll
need. As Maui is relatively small, there are only a few main
roads. There isn't a single "highway" on Maui. The closest
thing is a four lane road with a turn lane. I believe that speed
limit is 55mph.
Watch your speed in
Maui. After all, most of the locals are in no particular hurry.
Every so often you'll have a 4x4 truck zoom up to you on the road.
Kindly let him pass, but don't follow his lead and speed. There
are also speed traps in paradise. And, for the most part, the
speed limit stays in the 30mph area.
